
Merab Ghaghanidze (born January 12, 1961, Tbilisi, Georgia) is a Georgian literary scholar, researcher of religion and culture, philosopher, theologian; editor; professor; doctor of philology and philosophy (Georgia, Czech Republic, Italy); awarded a special diploma in spiritual theology (Vatican).
He was engaged in scholarship and pedagogical activities: Ilia Chavchavadze State Institute of Foreign Languages in Tbilisi (1984 – lecturer), Tbilisi State University (1985-1994 – associate professor), Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (1985-1994 – associate professor), Dominican Center of Christian Culture in Prague (1994-1997 – researcher), Charles University in Prague (1997-2001 – associate professor), Ilia Chavchavadze University of Language and Culture in Tbilisi (2002-2004 – visiting professor), Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (2003-2004 – visiting professor), Center of Christian Theology and Culture in Tbilisi (2003-present – founder, head), Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature in Tbilisi (2004-2006 – senior researcher), St. Thomas Aquinas Pontifical University in Rome (2005-2008 – visiting researcher), Ilia State University in Tbilisi (2006-2011 – professor), Tbilisi Free University (2011-2021 – professor), University of Georgia in Tbilisi (2021-present – professor).
His articles, papers and essays have been published in various collections and periodicals since 1984. He has published 17 books and has more than 200 publications on issues of literature, culture and religion.
His areas of research interest, in which he has published papers and books, are: history of Georgian literature, history of European literatures, literary theory, cultural studies, religious studies, historiography, Church history, intellectual history, European philosophy, Catholic theology.
He edited the publications of the Georgian Book Support Foundation “Memkvidreoba”, the yearbook of philological studies “Tsakhnagi” and the yearbook “Catholic Heritage in Georgia”; he is the editor of 35 books and collections.
He is a member of various councils, commissions and editorial boards.
