Manana Kvataia graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University with a major in Classical Philology. She later completed postgraduate studies at the Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. Since 1984, she has been a researcher at the Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature. In 2006, she earned the title of Doctor of Philology. The author of approximately 200 research works.
Her primary research interests include Georgian literature of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, comparative studies of foreign literature, textology, and émigré literature. Manana Kvataia has prepared critical editions of the works of prominent Georgian writers such as Ilia Chavchavadze, Akaki Tsereteli, Ivane Machabeli, and Viktor Nozadze.
Manana Kvataia has translated and published Grigol Robakidze’s essays written in German and Russian languages, as well as Viktor Nozadze’s German-language research works. She has also translated into Georgian the writings of several world-renowned theorists, including Jamison, Santayana, Thomas Eliot, Jacques Lacan, Marcel Proust, Woody Allen, Apollinaire, André Maurois, and others.
The publishing house “Artanuji” has released several of her translations of Grigol Robakidze’s works Demon and Myth, Portraits, Pro Domo Sua and War and Culture as a separate book under the series the “Unknown Grigol Robakidze”.
In addition to her work in literary translation, Manana Kvataia has an extensive academic career. From 1993 to 2006, she lectured at the Ilia Chavchavadze University of Western Languages and Cultures. Since 2008, she has been a professor at the Sukhumi State University.
